Under the sponge plain, where round sea pots hummed when the tide slipped over them, Nori counted the fading flecks of sunset on the sand. She wanted one glow-pearl from the far coral shelf before the first dark tide arrived. Her den was snug and smelled of salt and clean stone, but she eased out anyway, curling her arms close as tiny fish tickled past like silver leaves.
The shelf was farther than it looked. A cold current tugged one of Nori’s favorite pebble bracelets loose, and it clicked away into the dim. She nearly turned back. Then a soft green spark bobbed beside a coral branch. A lanternfish, caught in a loop of drifting grass, blinked once. “Could you spare an arm?” he whispered. Nori untangled him, though the grass scratched her skin like rough thread.
The lanternfish did not give her a pearl. Instead, he shook himself until drops of light floated from his fins—enough for Nori to gather gently in her curled arms. Back at the sponge plain, she opened her arms wide. Every fish, sponge, and coral tip glowed. The joy in Nori’s chest felt too large to keep, so she let it shine around everyone. If you spot her bright eyes among the bubbles, you may catch the last fleck of sunset on the sand.
