Under the soft ballpark lights, Tully carried a smooth white button in his pocket and his father’s walnut bat in both hands. He wanted to tap one pitch, just once, but the quiet sandlot felt as wide as night. The button clicked against the wood: tick, tick.

“Little crack is enough,” whispered Coach Ren. The next soft toss floated in, smelling of dust and summer grass. Tully squeezed the button, swung, and the ball kissed the bat—crack! The sound curled around them in two big loops.

Ever since that night, every true baseball swing leaves a round whisper in the air. If you spot the curved lines by the bat, you may hear Tully’s button: tick, tick.
