Every evening, after the museum doors clicked shut, James dusted the long glass cases and paused by the old lion shield. He held his breath in the cool, lemon-polish smell, hoping for one tiny roar from the carved lion.
One night, a pale moon-moth fluttered in through the keyhole and landed on the shield’s rim. Because of that, James did not tap the glass or call for help. Because of that, the moth’s wings brushed the lion’s nose, soft as a whisper. At last, the shield hummed, low and golden: “Wait.” James smiled and waited until the moth flew on.
