🎨 How to color it

Color the standing wolf soft slate gray, the tumbling wolf warm tan, the oak leaves pumpkin orange, and the tree stump chestnut brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small leaves and toe pads, then switch to broader strokes for the pups’ fluffy coats. Try making the clearing feel cozy by adding pale golden leaf shadows under the pups and a cool blue-green wash behind the trees.

Under the hush of tall trees, Nico tapped three leaves with his paw and whispered the rules of his new game: guess which leaf could ride the wind the longest. He wanted one curled oak leaf from the far clearing, the kind that spun like a tiny boat. The den hollow smelled of moss and milk-sweet fur, but Nico slipped out past the roots, ears full of shh-shh branches.

The best leaf waited near a stump, crisp and coppery. When Nico pounced, a cold beetle rolled from beneath it, legs tucked tight. Nico’s nose stung with the chill. He had promised himself the leaf, yet he scraped soft grass around the beetle and laid the oak leaf over it like a roof. “You can play warm-up,” he said.

On the way back, Nico found a plain little leaf stuck to his tail. His sister laughed and swatted at it, and their guessing game became a tumble of paws, tails, and giggles. If you spot one leaf close to the stump, keep Nico’s secret: it might be winning the quietest round of leaf-lift.
