Every morning, Nixie painted festival eggs between the tulips, tapping her brush twice on the pot—tik, tik—before every stripe. She wanted to finish the whole basket before the bellbirds crossed the clouds. But one egg beside her foot answered back: tok, tok, tok.
Nixie’s ears shot up. She rolled the plain egg under a daisy leaf and heard something skitter inside, like dry seeds in a pod. Because of that, she painted the shell with every pattern she knew—stars, zigzags, dots—until a thin glowing line appeared. Because of that, she cracked it carefully, and a curled petal-map sprang out, smelling of rain and peppery marigolds.
“Race you there,” Nixie whispered to the wind. She dashed through the flower maze, past buzzing bees and snap-snap grass, until the map led to a hollow paint pot nobody had washed since spring. Inside waited six missing moon-blue brushes. Next time you spot Nixie’s raised brush, listen for that first tik, tik.
