Every evening, Arlo pressed a dull glass marble to the rail of the upper wind deck and listened for one missing storm song. The huge planet below breathed in bands of amber cloud, hiss-soft and endless, but the smallest whirl near the southern curve had gone silent. Arlo wanted its hum back, so he tapped the marble three times and saved each tiny note inside it.
Until one day, a frost-moth messenger landed with cracked wings, smelling of cold metal and moon dust. It needed warmth to cross the dark gap home. Because of that, Arlo slipped the marble into its feathery bundle without telling the other cloud-listeners. Because of that, the saved notes melted out over the planet, silver and low, and the silent whirl began to sing again.
By morning, no one knew why the storm had returned. Arlo only leaned on the rail, hands empty, while the clouds curled like listening ears. Next time you find the smallest spiral, keep Arlo’s secret: it may be humming from a dull glass marble.
