Under the garland balcony, Nora held her tiny bells very still. They had belonged to her first gift box, and the silver cups smelled faintly of ribbon paper and cinnamon dust. All morning she practiced one brave sound: not a crash, not a clang, just a small ting. The satin bow on her top bobbed whenever she took a breath. “Here goes,” she whispered.
Ting! The holly berries bounced. Ting-ting! A paper star above her wiggled as if it had hiccups. Then the surprise came: the bells did not make music for ears. They made giggles for decorations. The garland snorted. A peppermint hook chuckled. Nora rang once more, on purpose this time, and laughed so hard her bow flopped sideways. Next time you spot those two little bells, listen closely for the first tiny ting.
