Behind the armory curtains, Niko tapped a wooden spoon on an empty shield. Clink, clink, hush. He had invented a game: hide a whisper in the safest place, then let someone brave find it. The candle smelled like warm honey, and the helmets on the shelves seemed to listen. “I’ll choose the smallest place,” Niko whispered, though his knees buzzed when the wind pushed at the door.
A soft scritch came from under the bench. Not a monster—just a cold little castle mouse, shaking beside the paint pots. Niko took one careful step, then another, and set the mouse inside a tiny painted castle on the shield, where the gold paint was still tacky. The mouse curled up, safe and silent. From that night on, every true castle shield carried a little castle badge, to remember the first brave whisper; if you study the shield, can you guess where it hid?
