🎨 How to color it

Color the squirrel warm chestnut brown, the giant acorn cap dark walnut, the oak leaves olive green, and the smaller acorns tan. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the big tail and acorn, then let a sharper pencil help with the crisscross cap lines. Try making the branch a soft gray-brown so the squirrel’s smile and big acorn feel extra cozy in the middle.

Under the whispery oaks, Pip rolled one giant acorn onto a low branch and patted its smooth side. It smelled like rain, bark, and warm nut bread. “This feels just right,” he said, curling his tail around his toes while leaves tick-ticked down around him.

He listened to beetles tapping under the branch and watched little acorns nestle in the moss below. Then the giant acorn gave a tiny wooden click. Its cap lifted like a door, and inside was a round, golden room lined with soft thistledown.

Pip did not climb in at once. He smiled at the quiet room, and the quiet room seemed to smile back. The grove had been saving a seat for him. Next time you see the big acorn in his paws, can you imagine the warm nut-bread smell waiting inside?
