Under a pale morning moon, Niko padded through the meadow, nose low to the cool, wet grass. He wanted to follow the fresh paw prints before the sun dried them away. Pebbles clicked under his paws—tik, tik—and each print pointed between tufts of grass like a quiet trail. The air smelled of moss, milkweed, and rain waiting inside the clouds.
The trail curved back to a wide flat stone. Niko stopped. Sitting on the stone was a small gray toad, puffing its throat in and out. “Those are mine,” the toad peeped. Niko blinked at the big wolf-shaped marks, and the toad hopped into one, making a soft plop. Moonlight filled the print like a little pond. Niko stepped beside it, and together their marks made a path neither could make alone. If you follow the paw prints at Niko’s feet, can you find the place where the meadow said, tik, tik, welcome home?
