Under the current gate, Dax pressed one fin against cold stone and counted the same three drips: tik, tik, shoom. He wanted the quiet shortcut the old rays whispered about, the one that could carry medicine kelp to sick pups before sunset. But every tunnel roared, every arch shoved him backward, and the silver pilot fish snickered, “Nothing opens for a shark who just sits.” Dax sat anyway. The gate smelled of salt and iron, and his teeth hummed with the passing tide.

After the seventh shoom, a bubble rose from the smallest crack in the floor. Not a grand doorway. Not a magic shell. Just a bubble, wobbling where nobody thought to look. Dax waited until it popped. Beneath it gleamed a pearl button, soft as moonlight. He nudged it once, and the whole sea folded into bright curling ribbons around him.
