Dragons appear in stories from many parts of the world, but they do not always mean the same thing. In Chinese tradition, long dragons are often linked with rain, rivers, strength, and good fortune, and they usually have long, snakelike bodies instead of bat wings. In many medieval European tales, dragons guard caves, towers, or treasure, which is why artists often draw them curled around gold. The word “dragon” comes from the Greek “drakon,” a word used for a great serpent. A red dragon is also a national symbol of Wales and appears on the Welsh flag, making it one of the most famous dragons in real-world heraldry.

Coloring tips

A classic dragon palette can include emerald or forest-green scales, ruby-red wing membranes, charcoal horns, ivory claws, amber eyes, gold coins, gray stone, and orange-yellow fire. For scaly bodies, color each scale with a slightly darker edge and a lighter center so the armor looks rounded. On wings, use smooth gradients from the finger-like bones toward the thin membrane, because dragon wings often have large open shapes that show shading well. Add a thin white highlight along horns, claws, and eyes to make them gleam. For a theme-specific twist, let the dragon’s fire become a light source: color nearby scales, castle stones, and treasure with warm orange reflections.
