Unicorn stories are much older than fairy-tale picture books. Ancient Greek writers such as Ctesias described a one-horned animal from faraway India, probably based on travelers’ reports of real animals. In medieval Europe, people believed a unicorn’s horn could make poisoned water safe; wealthy collectors sometimes displayed “unicorn horns” that were actually narwhal tusks. The unicorn also became a symbol of purity and strength in European art, which is why it often appears near maidens, gardens, and fountains. Scotland officially uses the unicorn as its national animal, and two chained unicorns appear on the Scottish royal coat of arms because legends said the creature was powerful and wild.

Coloring tips

Start with the classic unicorn palette: a pearly white or warm ivory body, blush-pink inner ears, silver or gold hooves, a spiraled horn shaded from lemon yellow to pale peach, and a mane that moves through lavender, bubble-gum pink, sky blue, mint green, and butter yellow. For the long mane and tail, color in the direction the hair flows, pressing lightly at the top of each strand and darker near the curl or braid. Add tiny dots of white gel pen on stars, horn ridges, and castle gems to make them sparkle. For a theme-specific twist, turn one unicorn into a midnight “constellation unicorn” with a deep navy coat, silver horn, and mane filled with tiny star clusters.
